If you like the funny political diatribes of Mark Thomas, you're bound to love Robert Newman. An anti-establishment comedian, political activist and author; Newman's shows are a sort of half comedy, half lecture hybrid. He lampoons Western foreign policy; particularly disputes over Middle Eastern oil, British imperialism and war.
It is however, a very different form of comedy to what he started off on. He first came into the public's radar in the late 80s, starring in The Mary Whitehouse Experience alongside David Baddiel. This was a topical BBC sketch show which got its name from the notorious 'Clean Up TV' campaigner. Newman and Baddiel then formed a double act performing on TV and stage, delivering mainly solo monologues, rarely appearing together in sketches. In 1993, they were the first comedians to appear and sell out the 12,000 capacity venue of Wembley Arena but after was their last appearance together, after which Newman went solo.
He has since written four novels and another sketch-based show commissioned by the BBC, called The History of The World Backwards.
