A Guy Called Gerald

A Guy Called Gerald, real name Gerald Simpson, hails from Moss Side in Manchester where he grew up in the Jamaican enclave attending Pentecostal church on Sundays and dub sound systems on Friday nights. He was already DJing at parties, playing hip hop and breaks, when the first techno started arriving from Detroit and Chicago. Simpson was immediately inspired to start recording. Using a Roland TB-303 bass synthesiser and an ancient TR-808 drum machine and working in his bedroom, A Guy Called Gerald began turning out techno tracks for the emerging Madchester rave scene. Perhaps his most famous track, Voodoo Ray, is from this period but nowadays AMCG has millions of quids worth of studio available whenever he wants it. In the late 80s Simpson was part of 808 State before leaving to start his own record label, Juice Box Records. The mashed up broken beat tracks produced over 3 albums for this label are generally acknowledged as the first jungle records ever produced. Within two years he was producing records with hundreds of brand new artists, at the crest of a new wave in urban music. An iconic producer and heroic figure in the rave scene of late 80s and 90s Manchester, A Guy Called Gerald still produces genius records every few years and hasn't lost his DJing knack at all. Live AV sets by this particular Guy are inspiring and draw huge, astonished crowds to dance before one of the founding fathers of Techno, Drum and Bass... and raving.
