Autechre

Albums of electronic music designed for listening in the home were not a new idea in the early '90s, thanks to Kraftwerk, Brian Eno and a handful of modern composers working at academic facilities, for example. But Warp Records' early '90s roster, including Autechre, were among the first to re-adapt the club music originally influenced by those early pioneers into full-length releases aimed more at the armchair than the dancefloor. The duo of Sean Booth and Rob Brown are now perhaps the iconic label's best-loved act.

Although Autechre's first efforts show the influence of original hip-hop, electro and techno, their willingness to experiment with equipment and develop idiosyncratic ways of using what they have has lead the pair to create densely experimental music. Chaotic, incrementally changing rhythms and unconventional melodies and harmonies (neither member is influenced by musical training) are to different extents features of most of their work.

Autechre's exceptional live shows avoid the hands-off, 'press play' approach laptop performers are sometimes guilty of employing, much of the music being created or adapted in real time. Although often recognisably based on recorded works, their performances are largely improvisational and usually surprisingly danceable.
