Benga

Dubstep originator and all-round lively character Benga is credited as one of the first producers to have developed the genre's present-day sound after its emergence from the dark 2-step garage of his native Croydon.

He's released on several of the scenes biggest labels, including Tempa, Big Apple, Planet Mu and, more recently, Tectonic, and regularly appears at events like DMZ and FWD, where his enormous hair-do means he never fails to go unnoticed (or unadorned by loving fans, at that).

His debut album, 'Diary Of An Afro Warrior' (Tempa, 2008), is seen by some as dubstep's defining statement, but has its fair share of critics to boot. Whatever the case, he and partner-in-crime Skream appear to be carrying the genre out of the bedroom/basement and into the mainstream, for better or for worse.
