Iconic hip hop producers who have done as much as anyone in the UK to promote hip hop, breaks and urban grooves. With a career that stretches back to 1987, these guys are true veterans but on stage they remain youthful, innovative and body rocking.
Coldcut produced the first sampled chart hit in 1987, entitled “Say Kids, What Time Is It?" and their latest album comes out in 2007. Along the way they have produced computer games, several multi platinum albums, hosted the Solid Steel show on Kiss FM, won the Jockey Slut poll for best mixtape of all time (70 Minutes of Madness) and produced sound and light installations for art galleries in Glasgow, London, Paris and Barcelona.
Oh yes, and did we mention their label? In 1990 after a successful tour with Norman Cook, backing ice cold hip hop up against big beat dance tracks, the boys decided to form a breaks record label. Ninja Tune is the benchmark against which start up labels measure themselves, with two BPI awards for best album of the year (‘90, ‘92) and a club night that is still remembered a decade later. Stealth was the first night in London to feature AV mixing, live MCs and graffiti in a Hoxton warehouse. Sound like something you went to last week?
On stage the boys act like a couple of out of control kids, grinning from ear to ear as they beatmix vinyl classics into their live AV production. Their pitch control is perfect – they know exactly where to take the crowd next and Coldcut live is more than a chance to see some legendary figures honing their trade. It’s also a guaranteed stone blast, every time.
