Hamburg's DJ Koze (real name Stefan Kozalla) is a tough nut to crack. Once a hip-hop producer when the genre was first taking off in Germany, he switched to house after getting bored with rap's inability, as he puts it, 'to think outside the box.' And thinking outside the box is what he's been doing since.
Adopting the moniker Koze after years of producing under 'Adolf Noise', his output is neither instantly likable nor particularly danceable. It's challenging, experimental stuff - and a breath of fresh air for those wanting an alternative to pounding basslines, formulaic structures and 'obvious' melodies.
Meanwhile, as a DJ his style is minimal in the sense that he avoids relying on hard-hitting climaxes or heavy bass to woo the crowd, but he's not exactly conventional either, looping and sampling sounds that the minimal-tech crowd would scoff at (i.e. trumpet choruses, jazz piano and kitschy vocals). For those more accustomed to electro house or techno, a set from Koze might sound like an effort - but perhaps one worth making.
