James Dewitt Yancey - better known as J Dilla or Jay Dee - was a producer spawned in the mid-90s underground hip hop scene in Detroit, Michigan.
He was massively influential, and produced numerous critically acclaimed albums by Common, Busta Rhymes, A Tribe Called Quest and The Pharcyde. He was a member of Detroit hip hop crew Slum Village.
His solo career took off in 2000 when he released 'Welcome 2 Detroit', an album swiftly followed by Çhampion Sound'- a collaborative album with California producer Madlib.
Yancey died in 2006 of the blood disease TTP. He remains a respected figurehead of the hip hop community and much of his work has been released posthumously.
