Jungle, Jamaican music, and the dark side of 2-step garage are all influences that feed into Kode9's music, along with – unusually – academic research into post-modernism and sonic culture.
Kode9's output has been prolific on his own Hyperdub label, often in collaboration with MC The Spaceape, a project they describe as 'bass fiction', but he has also appeared on other labels including Tempa and Rephlex. At one extreme, his work comprises minimal arrangements of rich, stand-alone bass topped with ghostly dub reggae components. The other end of the spectrum brings the beats upfront, incorporating a heavy 2-step swing and occasionally sound palettes that bring classic Detroit techno to mind.
Expect Kode9 the DJ to come with a distinctive selection, including way-upfront Hyperdub material and the latests dubs from present-day heroes – or even on occasion killer, reduced 2-step from back in the day.
