Moodymann

Genres: Funk/Soul, Disco, House

Detroit's Moodymann, otherwise known as Kenny Dixon Jr., has achieved something like cult status by largely refusing to be interviewed and by prolifically releasing limited-edition records on his own imprint KDJ and UK label Peacefrog. His affinity with other producers of the same generation like Theo Parrish and Rick Wilhite (with whom he collaborates as 3 Chairs) has led to use of the term Detroit house to describe their work.

Moodymann's lengthy, groove-based productions, which tend to be popular with both deep house and techno aficionados, draw on and sometimes sample his city's legacy of jazz, soul, disco and techno. His experimental approach to production and mixing, however, give his tracks an oblique feel compared to some more linear music. Vocals and jazz or funk riffs are often offset with low-fidelity sound and unconventional arrangements.

As a DJ he mixes house with the variety of music that influences his production. He also performs live as a singer and keyboardist.
