Born and raised in Detroit in the late 60's, Norm Talley was impressed by music at a boy and was into disco, progressive and jazz music at the age of 13. Talley began generating a soulful house sound during the analog years and released his first record, 'The Grove Street Shuffle' on Eddie Fowlkes' City Boy label. This launched his production career, and he went on to put out tracks on the Chisel imprint and City Boy's sister label, Nouveau Riche, among others.
Soon thereafter he, Mike Clark and Delano Smith launched their first residency as the Beatdown collective in 2000 at Club One X. This was also the first year of the now infamous Detroit Electronic Music Festival. The following year, Beatdownsounds began representing this Detroit sound at their own parties during the annual Winter Music Conference in Miami each year and released the Detroit Beatdown Volume 1 compilation, an instant success.
Norm's DJ style is one of soulful, vocal melodies laced over infectious percussion and thumping basslines that distinguish the BeatDown Sound from a whole host of others.
