Norman Jay is a national treasure, honoured by the Queen with an MBE in recognition of his "DJing and services to music" which not many people can say. In fact, nobody except Norman. Read an exclusive
Norman Jay interview conducted by Joe.
Mr Jay is the most phenomenal party DJ playing out regularly in London, with a great ear for downtempo Latina and soulful grooves that make him the guest of choice on any outdoor soundsystem. From Fruitstock, to The Big Chill, to all day recovery session in Brixton Lido, if you have a big crowd that needs lovely music, then call Norman. His own Good Times sound system at the north end of the Notting Hill Carnival is an iconic highlight of any carnival experience.
Pioneering, relentlessly upbeat and defiantly eclectic, Norman Jay plays jazz, funk, house, soul, reggae... anything to move a crowd. He looks out thoughtfully from behind his decks for a few seconds to see how everyone is doing, smiles, then dives into the best record box in the land and selects a perfect groove for the occasion.
It all comes pretty easy to NJ these days but he has never lost his enthusiasm and regularly plays marathon overtime sets at Brixton parties and for his residency at Dusted. One of the best DJs the world has produced so far, and a smashing fella to boot, even if he is a Spurs fan.
