Soulja Boy

Ice T reckons that Soulja Boy is 'killing hip hop' and that his break-out song 'Crank That' is 'garbage. Soulja Boy reckons that Ice T is old. And he is. Born in 1958, T is something of a grumpy old sell-out these days.

Clearly, Soulja Boy (aka Soulja Boy Tell 'Em) is excellent. Alright, so his calypso-inflected MTV-perfected moneyed ramblings about his money are hardly original. And his street cred is zero - the guy got given a recording studio when he was 14! By his daddy!

However, anybody who makes up a dance is OK with us. And the dance to Crank That is totally silly. It even has a move in it called 'Superman'! Full marks.

Of course, it's nowhere near as good as Chicken Noodle Soup or the Rolex sweep. But it's not exactly killing hip hop either.

Soulja Boy – Kiss Me Thru The Phone
Universal Music

Damn, wish I was 15 again, then I could sing this 'thru the phone' to my girl when I was unable to meet her, despite earlier assurances to the contrary, having been caught up in 'business' aka hanging around outside Burger King.

Following up Superman-dance sensation 'Crank That' comes this commercially cynical but sentimentally refreshing love ditty for all the over-emotional skunk-stunted grime-midgets out there. The tune is OK, the video a heart-warming collage of kisses and bling. Who says Happy Slappers don't need romance? 3/5
