Squarepusher

Foremostly a musician and latterly a producer of electronica, Squarepusher is a profoundly hermetic artist who is heavily influenced by the opposing styles of freeform jazz and abrasive jungle. He is a fantastic bass guitar player and samples his own playing to use on his productions.

His early work ('Feed Me Weird Things' is his first album - released on Aphex Twin's Rephlex imprint) is comprised of intense jungle breaks, suffused with glitchy, offbeat melodies and jazzy, instrumental arrangements. He found early audience in the emerging idm fans who liked their music to be unpredictable, dark and wrong. Today he is hailed as one of the daddies of idm and electronica - along with friend and label mate Aphex Twin (Richard D James).

He has absolutely fired out the albums - 10 at the time of writing - and the style ranges massively from the chaotic, abrasive jungle breaks of 'Hard Normal Daddy' to the relatively ambient, lo fi sounds of 'Music Is Rotted One Note'.

He had something resembling a hit with My Red Hot Car - the ambient drum 'n' bass track on 'Go Plastic' which was caned by Radio One DJs and caners alike. Should you get to see him live, he'll probably get his bass guitar out. To watch him at work is something amazing - but you probably won't be able to dance to any of it.
