Bristol boy Adrian Thaws got his break with Massive Attack, as one of their tag team of vocalists on early albums. Breaking away to record 1995's 'Maxinquaye', he rapidly won braying critical acclaim and celebrity status.
The aftermath saw Tricky's career level out (if level is the right word) into a string of quixotic albums and a wounded, not to mention violent, relationship with the press.
Tricky's strength is in not knowing boundaries. While the 'trip hop' tag hardly seems to bear mention in any context now, what is true is that his music draws in hip-hop, soul, rock and British pop, all attracted by a youthful curiosity that persists even on 2008's 'Knowle West Boy'.
