Wiley (or Wiley Kat as he originally called himself) is one of the originators of the mutation of UK garage known as grime. Thanks in part to an early attempt by XL Records to launch the East Londoner as grime's first crossover star, Wiley is widely known for his MC persona and lyrical efforts.
But before labels like XL were aware of what was emerging from the post-garage fallout, Wiley arguably had already made a place for himself as one of UK electronic music's most inventive producers. The icy, synthetic sound he called 'eski beat' created a distinctive sonic world that has come to define grime production as a whole.
Through production work and his crew Roll Deep, Wiley has also supported or mentored some of grime's best-known artists, including Tinchy Stryder, JME, Skepta and Dizzee Rascal.
