Genres: Performance Art, Art
Alexander Brener is a contemporary Russian performance artist who is interested in both the theoretical and the more practical aspects of the power of shock.
Born in Alma-Ata in 1957, Brener's notorious activities include defecating in front of a Van Gogh painting at the Museum of Fine Arts in Moscow, having sex in public and, most famously, spraying a green dollar sign on Kazimir Malevich's painting Suprematisme. For this latter act, Brener spent several years in jail.
During his time in jail, Brener co-wrote a number of books with Barbara Schurz.
