Having graduated from Goldsmiths in 1993, Fiona Banner is part of what has come to be seen as the 'second wave' of the YBA movement. Her medium of choice is language, but she is not really a poet, writer, or novelist. She's a conceptual artist.
She is often influenced by films: one work, 1997's
The Nam is a 1000 page book that summarizes the plots of six Vietnam films in minute detail.
Her most famous work was the 2002 Turner shortlisted piece
Arsewoman in Wonderland, a large text work that graphically describes the action of a porn-film.
