Whilst an undergraduate at Goldsmiths, Gary Hume took part in
Damien Hirst's
Freeze exhibition. He has since become one of the most prominent of the YBAs but without really feeling the need to court tabloid controversy.
His early work consisted of life-size paintings of hospital doors and he has retained the simple composition and large scale of these works throughout most of his career. A Royal Academician since 2001, Hume is now very much part of the establishment.
