Gilbert & George

After all the controversy, it's probably safe to say that Gilbert and George are National Treasures. They're just so cool: they dress the same, walk around East London in unison, eat at the same Turkish restaurant in Dalston at the same time every evening. One wonders what they talk about or what they wear to bed. Matching tweed nightshirts perhaps?

In between living their life as performance, Gilbert and George have also produced works of tangible brilliance: the faux-smug twattery of 'George the Cunt and Gilbert the Shit', for example, or the mock-shock frivolity of 'Shitted'.

For Gilbert and George, all is surface; every moment is a glib act of juvenile puerility. And yet it is all done with so much commitment: truly they are Britain's tip-top art pair. And Brian Sewell hates them too, which is always fun.
