Despite studying at Goldsmiths and exhibiting alongside
Hirst,
Emin et al at exhibitions like
Sensation, Gillian Wearing remains one of the less well known of the YBAs.
Influenced by, among other things, 1970s documentaries, Wearing creates work in film and photography that often explores the thoughts, feelings, and attitudes of 'real' people. Like Emin, she is interested in art's ability to make public that which might hitherto have remained personal and private.
Wearing won the Turner Prize in 1997.
