Grayson Perry
Grayson Perry hit the big time in 2003 when he became the first ceramic artist and the first transvestite to win the Turner Prize. Whilst a large portion of the media coverage focused on the artist's prim fairytale alter-ego Claire, Perry is also a highly innovative and political potter.
Perry's vases are generally classical in terms of form but are adorned with brightly coloured depictions of a variety of themes, from child abuse to sadomasochism. Images of the artist (both as Perry and as Claire) often feature. Perry deserves to be acclaimed both for the humour and courage that he brings to his alter-ego and for his extremely engaging work that manages to fuse the genteel with the shocking.
