Jasper Joffe

Contemporary figurative painter Jasper Joffe is probably best known for organising the annual Free Art Fair. Contrasting with the overt commercialism of Frieze, here all the work was given away at the end: artists involved included Bob and Roberta Smith, Harry Pye and Bruce McLean.

Joffe's 2008 show at V22 was a bit controversial. One half of the show was paintings of voluptuous ladies, the other of nasty little Nazis. The juxtaposition of these two sets of images was probably meant to say something profound, but it was all just fairly trite. "Curvy women: good; Nazis: bad" seemed about the extent of Joffe's intellectual analysis.

Joffe is also a published novelist.
