Jay Jopling

Genres: Gallery, Art
Eton-educated Jay Jopling is one of the most influential figures on the contemporary art scene. He became friends with Damien Hirst in the late 80s and began supporting the nascent YBAs (Antony Gormley, Tracey Emin, Marc Quinn, and Hirst) in the early 90s.

Jopling opened White Cube, a tiny gallery in Duke Street. St James' in 1993, a larger space in Hoxton Square in 2000, and another gallery in Mason's Yard in 2006. These venues have played host to all of the big names in contemporary British art: Gilbert & George, the Chapman Brothers, Gary Hume...

With his geek-chic specs, celebrity pals (including his wife, Sam Taylor Wood) and impeccable Savile Row tailoring, Jopling is a regular in the pap-pages of the free London papers.
