Jean-Michel Basquiat was one of the defining figures of the 1980s: he started as a New York graffiti artist, became friends with Andy Warhol, appeared in Blondie's video for Rapture, was on the front cover of the New York Times Magazine in 1985, and, in 1988, at the age of 27, he died from an overdose of cocaine and heroin.
In between times he also produced an important and highly influential body of work that encompasses the early graffiti work, the highly symbolic figurative paintings and a range of collaborative works with Andy Warhol.
