Although not actually part of
Damien Hirst's
Freeze exhibition of 1988, Marc Quinn is nonetheless one of the original YBAs. He was the first artist to be represented by
Jay Jopling and also exhibited at
Charles Saatchi's
Sensation exhibition in 1997.
Quinn's best-known work is a frozen sculpture of his own head entitled
self and made of 4.5 litres of blood taken from the artist's body over the course of five months. Rumour abounded for a while that
self had melted in Nigella Lawson's fridge, but alas for the tabloids, this proved to be untrue.
Quinn is also known for his beautiful frozen
Garden commissioned by Miuccia Prada, and a sculpture of Kate Moss entitled
Sphinx.
