One of the Goldsmiths group that includes
Damien Hirst and
Tracey Emin, Marcus Harvey achieved notoriety when his painting 'Myra' was unveiled at 1997's Sensation exhibition. A large scale portrait of child-murderer Myra Hindley composed of children's' handprints, 'Myra' bore the brunt of the tabloids' anti-YBA frenzy and was even hit by ink and eggs thrown by protesters.
Since then, Harvey's figurative paintings have retained their direct and provocative mentality but he has received less overtly negative attention. Some of his most acclaimed work from the mid-90s consists of impasto pornographic images with overlaid black outlines.
