Sarah Lucas

A contemporary of Damien Hirst, Angus Fairhurst, and Gary Hume at Goldsmiths, Sarah Lucas is one of the most prominent and deliberately controversial of the YBAs.

Like Tracey Emin (the two of them once ran a shop together in Bethnal Green) Lucas is interested in making public that which usually remains private. Her aesthetic is generally bawdy and grotty as she seeks to subvert gender stereotypes and social attitudes towards sexuality.

Influenced by both dada and Surrealism, Lucas' work - generally in photography, collage, and found objects - often incorporates confrontational sexual punning and genital imagery: check out works like 'Chicken Knickers' or 'Two Fried Eggs and a Kebab'.
