Sarah Maple

Born in Sussex in 1985, contemporary artist Sarah Maple hit the headlines in 2007 when she won the inaugural Channel 4/Saatchi Gallery New Sensations prize.

Maple's first major London solo show at SaLon Gallery in 2008 received widespread media attention, and she has already been described as the new Tracey Emin.

Depending on your point of view, that is either the ultimate accolade for a female contemporary artist or a bit of a backhanded compliment. But there are definite similarities between Maple's work and Emin's. Most obviously, they are primarily obsessed with themselves - Maple appears in almost all of her own works. There's also an interest in the role of women, celebrity, religion, sex, swearing and a desire to be confrontational.

Maple's work is forceful, but also very funny.
