Yoko Ono

Yoko Ono: the woman who broke up the Beatles or misunderstood artistic genius? Who knows... John Lennon once described her as "the world's most famous unknown artist: everybody knows her name, but nobody knows what she does". One might just as well say the same today.

However the lack of knowledge about specific works of art by Ono is partly due to the very nature of these works. Highly conceptual, avant-guarde and experimental, Ono's works are generally in the spheres of performance, temporary installation, intervention. There is rarely a lasting document of her work or an easy way to reproduce an image and flog it as a poster or something.

Simply on account of her fame alone, she's not somebody who can just be written off. Whether or not one is a fan of her brand of occasionally contrived conceptualism, opinions should be formed by engagement, not assumption.
