Amon Tobin

Somewhere back in the mid-90's a fresh faced Brazilian ex-pat living in the UK decided he was going to put down his harmonica, pick up a sampler, and name himself after a Stephen King novel. The result was Amon Tobin's entry into the world of music. Often employing a marriage of jazz and beats, Tobin has frequently stretched things further in the past by bringing in elements of bossa-nova, batucada, and jungle, and has more recently dabbled in darker, electronic soundtracks. All elements combine with a sense of song-writing that has elevated Tobin’s music above the standards of ‘background’ music.

With his focus more squarely shifted towards the manipulation of sound, though he is quite experimental, it's not usually an exercise in the avant-garde. The end product is miles forward in sonics and melody due to the depth of material sourced from a long history of musique-concrete composition, a result which satisfies his love for pushing the envelope.
