Bombay Bicycle Club

It's easy enough to be in a band these days; master a few chords, write some lyrics about youthful detachment and play the back room of some grotty boozer and invite all your mates.

The next day, you're the coolest kid in school. Bombay Bicycle Club go one better. Sure, they've done all of that, but the songs are actually good, very good in fact, and the lyrics actually listenable, suggesting wisdom beyond their teenage years.

Having opened V Festival 2006, recorded with Jim Abbiss, and with a debut album set to be released this summer, they are perhaps one of the few bands from the current all-ages movement that may go on to great things when the novelty of youth wears off.

Bombay Bicycle Club – Always Like This
Island Records

I defy anyone to be miserable whilst listening to this catchy little tune from everyone's favourite school-leavers.

Maybe it's because the sun is shining over Spoonfed HQ today, but I can just imagine listening to this on a warm summer's day, hanging out in the park, playing on the swings and eating ice cream, before heading off for a night on the town. And judging by the video, the Bombay Bicycle Club boys think so too. 3.5/5

Bombay Bicycle Club – Magnet
Island Records

Bombay Bicycle Club show off a few new tricks here: an ingenious reverberating basso vocal, a menacing bridge section and a couple of stripped down moments where the song glides along with its engines idling. Despite sounding like the bastard progeny of early U2 and Suede, it's still good.

But, and this may just be me, it also seems a little bit wet. There are four of you, for crying out loud! Make some flipping noise. 3/5
