Brakes

Brighton fourpiece comprising brothers Tom and Alex White, the creative core of Electric Soft Parade, ex-British Sea Power member Eamon Hamilton and Marc Beatty of The Tenderfoot.

Formed in 2002 as a side project from BSP and ESP, by 2005 Brakes had eclipsed the previous efforts of all members when debut album ‘Give Blood’ was voted the album of the year by Rough Trade shops, as well as receiving praise from virtually every angle.

The second album was just as good, they've made a bit of a dent in the US, and they endearingly support themselves on tour - with ESP under Brakes on the bill - both awesome bands. What's not to like?

Brakes – Why Tell The Truth (When It's Easier To Lie)
Rough Trade

OK, but not nearly as good as most of their stuff, this track will ironically be most people's introduction to Brakes thanks to an MTV2-friendly American video and Kooks-esque mildly satirical lyrical content. It will get heavy rotation and it's not bad... just a bit bland. Check out some of their other stuff via myspace.

They can rock harder and go a lot weirder but this is in-between landfill whimsy. 3/5
