American post-punk oddballs Devo are considered by many to have ushered in the 1980s synth pop fixation nigh-on singlehandedly, and certainly brought an exuberant sense of humour into serious music. With a warped and chaotic sound and vocal oft-compared to Talking Heads, Devo are a splash of ketchup on the business-like lapel of post-punk.
Wearing weird red plastic hats like mass-marketed tv ninjas, and injecting kitsch, satirical social commentary and surrealist humour into their madcap music, it's difficult to overestimate the effect Devo have had upon contemporary music.
