Dizzee Rascal

Dylan Mills, aka Dizzee Rascal first began MCing on pirate radio and at raves at fifteen, a scene he has been keen to distance himself from since finding success. Once a member of grime collective Roll Deep, he shot to fame with the 2003 Mercury Music Prize winning album 'Boy in da Corner'. His music is an eclectic mixture of garage and hip-hop beats with an extremely broad palette of influences, ranging from metal guitars to found sounds, drill and bass synth lines, eclectic samples and even Japanese court music. His vocal performance is also distinctive, he uses a fast version of rapping which blends elements from garage MCing, conventional rap, grime and ragga.

Dizzee Rascal - Dance Wiv Me
XL
It's hard not to like Dizzee Rascal. He's got this 'butter wouldn't melt' boy next door look about him. Then again, I am in the right demographic to get his music, falling into the 'skinny middle-class white guy' percentile.

Anyway, this track is weird. It's like Dizzee rapping over Royksopp's 'Eple'with lyrics that are a little gangsta but still dead friendly. It's got Calvin Harris on it, but still manages to be really fun in an underage disco sort of way. DH

Dizzee Rascal – Bonkers
Dirtee Stank Recordings

'All I care about is sex and violence.' So asserts Mr. Rascal on new single 'Bonkers'. Really? Well, that and collaborating with Lily Allen, Calvin Harris, Chrome and Basement Jaxx. Now he can add major house(hold) name Armand Van Helden to that illustrious list.

With thudding bass underpinning a grindingly catchy tune, and Dizzee spouting some zaneeee shizzle over da top, it's difficult to see how anybody could think these two are bonkers. This is a shrewd career move for the both of them.

Well, what a journey it’s been for everyone’s favourite rude boi. Having become a cult hero with his breakout single ‘Jus’ A Rascal’, he has since become, via a brief chat with Jeremy Paxman and a victorious appearance at Glastonbury, one of the nation’s favourite perfomers, beloved of grimesters and teenyboppers alike. Hell, even my mum’s been know to sing along... While not everything he does will be to everyone’s tastes, it is refreshing to see an artist take risks and experiment, even if it doesn’t always work out. Collaborations with artists as diverse as Arctic Monkeys and Basement Jaxx ensure you’re never sure what his next step will be.
