Emmy The Great

London based singer-songwriter Emmy the Great, was born Emma-Lee Moss in Hong Kong, immigrating with her family to London as a child.

A proponent of the London anti-folk scene, her lyrics range from the whimsical to downright spite, with plenty of humour and always delivered with some of the sweetest vocals you will ever hear.

She has collaborated with several other artists, namely Johnny Flynn, Jeremy Warmsrley and Helen White, and has supported Martha Wainwright, Mystery Jets, Tilly and the Wall, Jamie T and Kimya Dawson.

Emmy The Great – Edward Is Deadward
Close Harbour

The seemingly endless search for musical originality often leads to a sound so generic that you could use it to lull a gerbil with ADHD to sleep. It is therefore refreshing to see Emmy the Great sticking rigidly to the formula for traditional folk, without singing through a toilet U-bend or playing the drums on lilypads.

More of an epic poem of bereavement than a folk song, she teams an innocent voice with her usual play on words to produce quite a beautiful cliché-embracing song. 3/5
