Florence and The Machine

Indie-pop newcomers Florence and The Machine hit the ground running in 2009, winning the Critics Choice Award for new talent at the Brits, getting signed to huge pop label Island and playing a number of top UK festivals including Glastonbury, T In The Park, Camp Bestival, Lovebox, Leeds and Reading.

Florence Welch and her backing band ('The Machine') are managed by Mairead Nash (one half of the DJ outfit Queens of Noize) who met Florence when she drunkenly dragged her into a toilet at one of her nightclubs and sang her an Etta James song. Nash described it as 'one of those slow-motion moments. I got goose bumps all over.'

Their sound has been described as 'soul-inspired indie' and Florence says she tries to write metaphorical songs that are 'stories with consequences and weird morality issues'. With an incredibly powerful and beautiful voice, it is apt that her debut album is called Lungs, the girl's certainly got a good set on her.

With an obscene amount of talent and the looks and charm to boot, Florence and the Machine will blow you away. From the deepest, darkest depths of Camberwell, she has a spectacularly massive, sexy voice and is damn compelling to watch. She's a young'un as well which means there can only be more brilliance to come.

Florence and The Machine - Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up)
Island Records

As I was crossing my fingers I would make it home in my seriously ill car last weekend, this song came on the radio and it was so good it gave me goose bumps.

Poetic lyrics tell a dream-like tale of destruction and sacrifice: 'Midas is king and he holds me so tight/And turns me to gold in the sunlight', but it is the chorus that really pierces you, as Florence's soaring voice combines with gospel vocals, harp and piano melodies to create a powerful crescendo; all lungs, heart and soul. What a beautiful record.
