Although never one of the most commercially successful punk bands of the late '70s: Gang of Four could lay claim to be one of the most influential, bridging the gap between punk and disco it have laid the groundwork for everyone from The Rapture and Fugazi to Bloc Party and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.
Spawning out of the Leeds art scene at the height of the punk era, Gang of Four built a small, if fiercely loyal following through an approach that blended Marxism, stripped down funk and copious amounts of lager. Finding only minor success in the UK, it was in the US where the band found the most accolades; their aggressive yet experimental sound fitted in perfectly with the burgeoning no wave scene.
Although the band has split up a number of times, they have been touring with the original line-up since 2005, playing the likes of ATP and the Bauhaus.
