Gil Scott-Heron is a poet, musician and author best known for his work with Brian Jackson in the 70's. Their music sometimes included spoken word over African inspired beats and is often cited as a kind of proto-hip hop and his influence on hip hop and neo soul is undeniable - although the often used label 'godfather of rap' is possibly a step too far. From this period he is best known for 'The Revolution will not be Televised' and 'The Bottle'.
Martin Luther King day in America is a national holiday because of a campaign championed by Stevie Wonder and Scott-Heron.
More recently Scott-Heron has had various brushes with the law for possession of cocaine and violation of parole for said offence. He has also admitted to being HIV positive.
2010 saw the release of his first album in 13 years on XL records to critical acclaim and should finally cement his place as one of the most important artists of our times.
