Girls

A pairing of Holy Shit's Christopher Owens and infamous ladykiller Chet 'JR' White, you might be mistaken for thinking Girls one of those hopeless hipster bands that adorn the pages of Nylon, but you'd be wrong - for despite the vest and checked shirt look, there is a pretty effective psychedelic/garage rock band lurking underneath.

At their most spectacular fuzzing it up like some twisted, nightmareish version of the Velvet Underground, Girls have an unfortunate tendency to slip off the boil on record - but it's all go-go-go when they're playing live - so we can let them off.

Oh yeah, some of their songs have been made available as free downloads via RCRD LBL.

Girls – Lust For Life
Matador

A weird but wonderful offering (as usual) from Girls, whimsically wanting a boyfriend over a surfy, skiffle beat. This is what the cool kids are playing now. It makes you dance sideways and clap along.

Iggy Pop it's not, but there are parallels between Christopher Owens' aspirational lyrics about wanting certain things, but not really wanting any of that rubbish at all, and the braggadocio of the punk original. We're more ironically subversive nowadays while Iggy is an insurance salesman. 4/5
