Cast your mind back to 2002 when reality television was still relatively bearable and the high-trousered, flat-topped smarmathon that is Simon Cowell hadn't yet turned himself into a self-parodying brand.
It was back then that five unknown young girls won
Popstars:The Rivals and were catapulted out of the supermarket checkout and into the limelight. They were (and are) Girls Aloud.
Now, with a string of hits behind them, Girls Aloud can lay a justifiable claim to being the best girl band since the Spice Girls, if not ever. There's blonde party animal Sarah, girl-next-door Kimberley, ginger Nicola, tiny Nadine and high-class WAG Cheryl (who's now something of a national treasure thanks to her work as a judge on X Factor in 2008).
Girls Aloud are yet to do a crap song: even the album tracks are OK. Just check out this for a list of some of their singles: Sound of the Underground, No Good Advice, The Show, Love Machine, Biology, Something Kinda Ooooh, Sexy! No No No, Can't Speak French, The Loving Kind...
Both super-slick and boldly innovative at the same time, Girls Aloud even have charm, in a strange sort of way.
Absolutely bloody brilliant!
