Kanye West

Hip hop saviour Kanye West is the only one of Jay Z's protégés who looks like he could equal the mastery of his mentor. Blessed with a wonderful ear for production, and a visionary interest in every kind of dance and indie music, along with a colossal ego, Kanye West is the answer to the boring, bling-centric posturing of the gangsta crew.

West is also a very unusual and outspoken personality. The son of a Black Panther activist and photojournalist, and a university lecturer, Kanye had a privileged upbringing that rivals have used to try and distance him from his audiences. However, West is the only hip hop star of the post gangsta era to speak up about politics. He famously announced during a telethon to raise money for the Red Cross "George Bush doesn't care about black people". Respect!

Not only does he think, speak and rap about issues. Kanye is also a driving force in the evolution of hip hop. Though he acknowledges a huge debt to the Wu Tang Clan in terms of his own verbal and sartorial style, West is the master of the big production and by bringing electro producers and white laptop nerds to the forefront in his stable of artists, has given hip hop a crossover rave and indie appeal way beyond what Fifty Cent and his pack of preening girls could hope to achieve.

His live shows, are outstanding. Click here to read Chippy's review of his recent O2 gig.
