Katie Stelmanis

Formerly the singer of Galaxy, Katie is a powerful vocalist with a definite taste for Gregorian sounds. By layering choirs of her own voice behind her and maintaining a tone that could be described as either hypnotic, or monotonous, she creates a sound like you might hear out of a medieval choir in a really sinister movie.

Like Annie Lennox or Kate Bush, she invests her songs with plenty of solemn presence, thanks to soaring strings, deep drums and minor chords.

It's not going to be everyone's taste (let's be honest, it's repetitive) but this new deep voiced indie starlet promises much. And one of her haunting ditties will provide a little shade to your playlist. Just don't listen to three in a row or you'll turn into a monk.

Katie Stelmanis – Believe Me
Vice/Loog

Katie becomes a pagan siren on this track, driven by a strong, original voice. A medieval timpani drums someone a bit different to their dunking stool, while plinking minor piano chords recall the engaging discordance of her all-time heroine Kate Bush.

A captivating first release from Stelmanis' cultish, Gregorian album 'Join Us'. It seems the girl is destined to win an army of followers, swept away by her vocal power and the folkish mystery of her melodies. The video is hilarious. 4/5
