Lawrence Krishna Parker is KRS-One; a pioneering American MC and producer from Brooklyn. He has many pseudonyms: Kris Parker, The Blastmaster, The Teacha, and The Philosopher.
KRS-One was originally his graf tag and is is derived from him hanging with the Hare Krishnas in his youth - earning the nickname Kris. KRS-One is short fro Kris Number One. The backronym is 'Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everyone'.
KRS-One began recording as one half of Boogie Down Productions (BDP) with DJ Scott La Rock. They released their debut album 'Criminal Minded' in 1987 - the album cover featuring BDP draped in ammo and brandishing guns is credited with setting the template for the burgeoning genres of hardcore and gangsta rap.
After four albums with BDP, in '93 KRS-One struck out on his own with his solo album 'Return Of The Boom Bap' (which featured infamous hardcore track 'Sound Of Da Police'.
The Stop The Violence Movement was formed by KRS-One in the 80s after a young fan was killed in a shooting at a Public Enemy and BDP gig.
He collaborated with Buckshot on an album called 'Survival Skills' in 2009.
