La Roux

Agyness Deyn meets Prince and the unlikely pairing produce a child, Le Roux (aka Elly Jackson). There is no other explanation.

Leading the way in driving electro-pop floorfillers, La Roux is doing a new thing by way of an old thing; essentially throwing her pixie-booted self feet first into the 80s revival thing but updating it with some crisp-edged production and post-Lily Allen mouthy east London vocals. The result is refreshingly harmonious, rocking elements of new wave, disco and art rock.

In For The Kill
Polydor

It's rare that a remix gets more attention than the original but that has been the case with La Roux's 'In For The Kill' and it's not hard to see why. The official release has an '80s synth-pop sound which holds its own against the likes of Ladyhawke et al but it doesn't break the mould.

Skream's rework slows it right down, cuts out the Casio noises and concentrates on Jackson's beautiful vocals, climaxing with an electrifying dnb drop at 4:10. The result is spine-chillingly good. 3/5 for the original / 4.5/5 for the remix

RESPECT for this, La Roux's opinion on RnB. When I read this I instantly liked her even more than before. It's TRUE! "RnB is very kind of empty, like hollow and not rooted in anything good or healthy. Lyrically it's just like really really bad - a lot of it just doesn't mean anything... 'Baby I love you, I want to kiss you'. It's just like what are you on about? Shut up. It certainly doesn't make me feel anything special, or doesn't make me think, or go somewhere else in my mind. I just don't get it. And you wonder if you weren't half naked would you be selling any records? Which obviously is just wrong. You shouldn't be selling records because you're half naked - if you want to do that be a porn star"

Unfortuatnely she also said this..."There's far more ways to be sexy than to dress in a miniskirt and a tank top … I think you attract a certain kind of man by dressing like that. Women wonder why they get beaten up, or have relationships with arsehole men. Because you attracted one, you twat."

La Roux – Quicksand
Great beats, great voice, hooky melodic line – the best bits pilfer Prince's 'When Doves Cry' and Outkast's bassline from 'Hey Ya'. The other thing La Roux's latest sounds a bit like... is her own biggest hit.

No way will this get played over 'In For The Kill' in a party context – it's very similar and less infectiously brilliant. Meanwhile it will get heavy rotation on the radio and outshine all the other shite on there. It's pretty good. 3.5/5
