Formed in 1932 by Sir Thomas Beecham, the London Philharmonic Orchestra is now the resident orchestra of the Royal Festival Hall.
In earlier years the orchestra was very active touring the country, and there is a special bond between the orchestra and the general public: when an air raid on the Queen Mary Hall in London destroyed all instruments in 1941, the British public donated new ones.
or years, this highly rated orchestra has had to struggle against the deadening acoustics of their home venue. The current Principal Conductor, Vladimir Jurowski, has praised the new acoustics of the Festival Hall. However it remains to be seen whether this excellent orchestra will at last have an acoustic to match their huge ability.
