London Symphony Orchestra
Genres: ClassicalFormed in 1904 as an independent orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra enjoys a free wheeling reputation to this day. Among lovers of classical music, they are renowned for a flashy style - best appreciated with testing composers like Berlioz and Prokofiev who wrote 'show off' music.
To match this eccentricity the orchestra has often courted controversy, for instance by rejecting women until the late 20th century. The idea of a rebellious classical orchestra is, of course, mystifying to outsiders and indeed this band of freewheeling musicians are pretty establishment, playing long residencies at the Barbican.
Famous composers who have conducted the LSO include Edward Elgar, Andre Previn and Leonard Bernstein. The flute legend James Galway played in their woodwind section for years. The LSO constantly appears on soundtracks and collaborations and their most recognised work includes Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band with The Beatles, Bad with Michael Jackson and the music for films including Indiana Jones, Harry Potter and... Star Wars.
