Operahouse

Led by the distinctive Brett Anderson-esque vocals of Johnny Lloyd this indie/rock five-piece started out a shambolic pub band with no distinct sound around the same time as Spoonfed started out as a Camden pilot project. Often the two dreamy projects would give each other hostile glances in the sadly burnt Nambucca.

Now that we're the best website in London, they've come on a lot too, snagging a deal with Marrakesh records and developing an epic-meets-homegrown sound and a respectable clutch of memorable songs.

Nowadays, the songs all sound different, but there isn't a hint of incoherence - instead, it's all carefully differentiated, with smart lyrics and consistently crisp drum and guitars giving a big sound that recalls say, Jesus Jones, Suede or The Killers.

Operahouse – Genius Child
Marrakesh Records

With Bowie-esque echoing vocals and plangent, descending guitar line, this track starts promisingly, and indeed, it's got a lot more to it than 90% of the crud out there. The spazz-out breakdown is a little predictable, if we're splitting hairs. And the 'oh my God I'm going under' refrain recalls the Kaiser Chiefs – unfortunate!

That said, this marriage of epic sound, crisp production and heartfelt indie ethos is a winning one. A track that deserves to rock a large crowd. 3.5/5
