Patrick, now age 23, grew up in South London and began refining his talents at the age of eleven when he escaped from school troubles by late night experimentation in the corners of his bedroom with his violin, home-made theremin, voice and car boot sale organs on a four-track tape recorder.
His DIY approach eventually led to debut LP ‘Lycanthropy’, an exploration of his unhappy childhood. Seconding to Cornwall to write and record the follow-up, ‘Wind in the Wires’, his maturing sound and sophisticated use of a huge array of instruments led to a support slot with Bloc Party, a sold out London Scala show and a major record deal. Recently released third effort ‘The Magic Position’ has earned rave reviews for Wolf’s new poppier sound.
His live show is one not to be missed, as he switches from keyboard to theremin to violin to accordion and anything else that he can grab, always decked out in his own gloriously garish personalized clothing. Precocious, talented, ground-breaking…the superlatives roll off the tongue.
The word genius is used far too often in this day and age, for Patrick Wolf it is justified.
