Probably due to lead-singer Brian Molko's love of make-up and androgyny, Placebo have always been sort of dismissed as nothing more than a glam version of Nirvana, but truth be told, these guys have done more for British alternative rock than anyone we can think of (except, arguably Ash).
Forming in 1994, their blend of Pixies style guitar and Manic Street Preacher shock imagery won them many fans pretty much straight away, and by the end of the decade they were one of the bands you had to see if you attended a festival.
Although recent times have seen them mature slightly and travel a less controversial artistic path, we defy you not to go completely nuts whenever the first chords of 'Nancy Boy' are struck.
