"Al Capone, Guns Don't Argue"
With one of the most recognisable lyrics in the history of Jamaican music, this song, performed in a cameo by Prince Buster features on the acclaimed 1972 Jimmy Cliff film The Harder They Come. Watched by millions around the world, the film cemented Buster's place among the pantheon of globally recognised reggae superstars.
In fact, he was more of a ska man and had virtually stopped producing music in at the time the film was produced. His slowed down, gangster-tinged music with conscious, Marcus-Garvey inspired lyrics were forerunners of new ska styles, rocksteady and ultimately reggae. No less a man than Bob Marley admitted to being inspired by the attitude and delivery of Prince Buster.
Prince Buster has come out of retirement and now performs around the world. Considering his age he is a magnificent vocalist but seeing him is inevitably about his legacy, as much as his performance. This is the original rudeboy.
